Keystone Mercy Holds Community Baby Shower in West Philadelphia

Prenatal Information Brought Directly to West Philadelphia Moms-to-Be

June 13, 2008
Philadelphia, PA
– Keystone Mercy Health Plan brought prenatal information directly to West Philadelphia mothers-to-be through its first-ever Community Baby Shower on June 12. About 200 people - and more than 100 moms-to-be – took part in health education classes taught by a wide range of health and community groups. The moms-to-be also received prenatal yoga lessons, raffle prizes, and baby giveaways. Mothers who gave birth within the past two months were also invited to learn about newborn care.

The event was held at the West Philadelphia YMCA, and organizations including the Maternity Care Coalition, Pettaway Pursuit Foundation, Intercultural Family Services, WIC, the Office of Minority Health, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health gave out information and provided health screenings.

At the event, Keystone Mercy also enrolled its members in its WeeCare Maternity program, which provides pregnant women with education and resources to help ensure they have a safe pregnancy and a healthy baby. WeeCare encourages pregnant women to eat right and avoid drugs, alcohol and smoking.

The program also works with the woman’s doctor/midwife to make sure she gets the care she needs and that she understands the importance of seeing her doctor/midwife regularly. According to the March of Dimes, women who see a health care provider regularly during pregnancy have healthier babies, are less likely to deliver prematurely, and are less likely to have other serious problems related to pregnancy.
