Healthy Hoops Asthma Olympics Helps Chester, Upper Darby and Drexel Hill Children Breathe Easier

May 17 Healthy Hoops Asthma Olympics Helps Teach Families How to Reduce Kids? Asthma Attacks and Emergency Room Visits

May 23, 2008
Philadelphia, PA
–More than 100 Delaware and Chester County children with asthma and their family members were breathing easier on Saturday, May 17, thanks to the Healthy HoopsSM Asthma Olympics, an innovative program in which children participated in track and field events while learning about their asthma and how to better manage it.

The Healthy Hoops Asthma Olympics was presented by Keystone Mercy Health Plan, Crozer-Keystone Health System, and the American Lung Association. It is sponsored by AstraZeneca. At the event, 5- to 12-year-old participants rotated through athletic events as well as educational stations.

Asthma affects about 9 million children nationally, causing nearly 4 million asthma attacks and more than 641,000 emergency room visits each year, according to Centers for Disease Control. The problem is especially severe for children living in poverty.
