Asthma Education Program Uses Basketball to Help Manage Asthma in Children

More than 2,000 children have participated in Healthy Hoops since 2003

June 27, 2007
Philadelphia, PA - More than 500 children and parents from Philadelphia and Chester participated in the Kick Off of the 2007 Healthy Hoops program held recently at the Liacouras Center in North Philadelphia.  Healthy Hoops is an innovative asthma management program that uses basketball as a platform to teach children with asthma and their families how to proactively manage the disease through proper nutrition, exercise, and medication use.  The program serves disadvantaged children with asthma and their families.

In 2003, Healthy Hoops was created by Keystone Mercy Health Plan, in collaboration with the Healthy Hoops Coalition, made up of AstraZeneca, Crozer-Keystone Health System, and local basketball coaches and health organizations, in response to the growing problem of asthma in the Philadelphia area.  Besides having one of the highest rates of asthma in the nation, Philadelphia was recently found to be the second worst city in America for asthma sufferers to live, according to a report by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

The Kick Off event included health assessments and hands-on asthma education for the children and their parents; basketball coaching sessions for the children from local coaches Sonny Hill, Speedy Morris, Brian Daly, and Bill Fox; parent education sessions; and entertainment for the whole family.  During the program, children also got a chance to interact with Hip Hop, the Philadelphia 76ers’ mascot, who participated in the festivities.  In addition to focusing on asthma management, the program targeted decreasing childhood obesity and increasing cardiovascular activity, as they relate to asthma.  This ongoing program will culminate with a full-day Healthy Hoops basketball and asthma management camp being held in November.

“Healthy Hoops has been a great success in this community due to the innovative program design and delivery made possible by the collaboration of the Healthy Hoops Coalition,” said Daniel J. Hilferty, President and Chief Executive Officer, Keystone Mercy Health Plan, and visionary of the Healthy Hoops program. “All of us at Keystone Mercy believe in this program and the power it has to change lives.  Our goal is to take this program to a national level, so we can help more American families achieve a higher quality of life for their children who are living with asthma.”

Healthy Hoops Background
Healthy Hoops was developed to bridge the racial disparity gap of children with asthma, the most common chronic disease among children, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.  According to a 2006 study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania, 26.7% of children in Southeastern Pennsylvania have asthma.  A disproportionate amount of these children are from underserved populations.

Over the past four years, Healthy Hoops has achieved positive participation rates and health outcomes.  Participants have shown an increase in the use of preventive medications, and a decrease in ER visits and hospitalizations, nocturnal awakenings, and the use of asthma rescue medication.  Healthy Hoops has expanded nationally to Keystone Mercy's sister company, Select Health of South Carolina, Inc., and is currently expanding to other markets, including Washington D.C. and Kentucky.
