Philadelphia City Council Recognizes Keystone Mercy Health Plan and AstraZeneca’s Community Outreach InitiativeInnovative Asthma Education Program Honored with City Council CitationNovember 16, 2006 Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell issued the citation during the City Council meeting this morning at City Hall. Councilwoman Blackwell represents the 3rd District of West Philadelphia, home of the first Healthy Hoops program in 2003. The City Council joined in recognizing Keystone Mercy and AstraZeneca’s innovative asthma education program and encouraged Philadelphians to take part in the program and educate themselves on asthma awareness, according to Councilwoman Blackwell’s citation address. City Council’s Healthy Hoops citation was announced following the completion of the 2006 Healthy Hoops program in Philadelphia. This year’s program wrapped up this past Sunday with a Fall Challenge, where nearly 400 children with asthma and their families participated in a series of asthma and obesity health screenings and health assessments, health education and a basketball clinic for the Healthy Hoops participants. “This is truly an honor for Keystone Mercy to be recognized by City Council for our efforts in managing pediatric asthma through the Healthy Hoops Program,” said Anne Morrissey, President, Pennsylvania Managed Care, Keystone Mercy Health Plan. “Councilwoman Blackwell’s acknowledgement today confirms our work as a leader in Medicaid Managed Care in the Philadelphia region and recognizes Healthy Hoops as an innovative and award-winning asthma outreach initiative.” Healthy Hoops was developed to help children with asthma, the most common chronic disease among children, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. According to the 2002 Household Health Survey, 10 percent of children under the age of 18 in Southeast Pennsylvania have asthma, representing nearly 105,000 children in the region. The program’s results have been extremely positive. Children who have participated since the beginning of the program experienced a decrease in ER visits, a decrease in rescue medication use, an increase in preventive medication use and a decrease in nocturnal awakenings and sleep disturbances. Now in its fourth year, the program follows participants from West, North and Northwest Philadelphia, and Chester, PA, reinforcing the importance of good nutrition, proper medication use and exercise in managing asthma to parents and children alike. To date, over 1,400 local children with asthma, their parents and siblings have participated in the Healthy Hoops program. Healthy Hoops was recently awarded the prestigious “Recognizing Innovation in Multicultural Health Care Award” by the National Committee for Quality Assurance for the program’s efforts to reach across cultural divides and provide enrollees in Philadelphia with culturally and linguistically appropriate services.
