Health Ministry Program for Women Encourages Change for Life

Keystone Mercy Health Plan continues innovative program to reduce Health Disparities in women of color

October 5, 2006
Philadelphia, PA - It is well noted that many health disparities are related to a variety of lifestyle and health literacy factors. The 7th Annual Health Ministry Program for Women targets minority and underserved women emphasizing many leading health indicators, including physical activity, spirituality, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stress management and violence. The event will be held Saturday, October 21, 2006, from 9 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, located at 2800 Cheltenham Avenue in Philadelphia.

Sponsored by Keystone Mercy Health Plan and Eli Lilly, the Health Ministry Program for Women aims to equip women of all ages with the education, tools and resources to keep themselves healthy through all stages of life.

This year's program is focused on wellness in life, and will offer interactive workshops on how to achieve life long health and free screening villages providing a plethora of preventive health screenings. The workshops will center on targeting the specific health needs of minority women by creating a healthy body, mind and spirit.

The Reverend Dr. Millicent Hunter, The Baptist Worship Center; Dr. Gayle K. Porter, The Gaston & Porter Health Improvement Center; and Dr. Andrea Pennington, The Pennington Empowerment Group will be the day's keynote speakers, focusing on women's wellness issues.

Besides the interactive and hands-on workshops, the free, daylong conference will nourish the soul with a musical jamboree featuring the beautiful sounds of the Archdioceses Choir, Spirit of David Praise Dancers, City Wide Choir, Pastor Waller and Enon Mass Choir and the renowned Gospel Queen Dottie Peoples.

"The Health Ministry Program for Women provides the necessary tools women need to charge of their lives," says Maria Pajil Battle, Senior Vice President, Public Affairs and Marketing, Keystone Mercy. "This year's keynote speakers will touch your heart, our many health and wellness programs will educate your mind, and our musical entertainment will stir your soul."

Over the seven years of the program's existence, more than 55,000 women and young girls across the Delaware Valley region have participated in the many workshops, seminars and conferences, using the church as a forum to deliver health information and knowledge that has empowered women to make healthy lifestyles changes.
