Keystone Mercy Health Plan Employee and Member Receive Mercy Courage Award

April 4, 2006
Philadelphia, PA - Bonnie Earl, a Keystone Mercy Health Plan employee, and Paul Reed, a Keystone Mercy member, are among the recipients of the 2006 Mercy Courage Award for Personal Achievement. A reception will be held in their honor tomorrow, April 5, at the Drexelbrook Corporate Event Center in Drexel Hill.

The Mercy Courage Award honors people "who triumph over medical challenge, demonstrate extraordinary personal sacrifice while caring for others, and selflessly give back to the community."

Earl and Reed are both recipients of the Personal Achievement Award, which recognizes recipients "for overcoming a major personal injury, disease or other medical condition and for using that experience to be of service to others."

Bonnie Earl, a Case Manager at Keystone Mercy and former respiratory therapist at Mercy Hospital in Philadelphia, has overcome several serious physical illnesses and injuries. Through all her physical and emotional challenges, Earl continues to live the Company's mission and values to selflessly care for Keystone Mercy members, along with her family.

"I believe God sends good news to lift spirits and that is what it (the award) did for me," said Earl. "I believe in my heart that God directs me, and behind every dark cloud is a silver lining. You just have to wait and it will come to you."

Everyday Paul Reed, a Keystone Mercy member, overcomes the adversities of being wheelchair bound due to a physical disability. Reed is an outspoken advocate for the elderly and disabled, volunteering his time and talents to countless groups throughout the Philadelphia region.

"It amazed me that he (Reed) has this inner strength and persistence to do what he does everyday, and still have energy to go in the community to help other people with disabilities," said Rose Anne Rosenstock, RN, Care Coordination Case Manager, Keystone Mercy. "He is determined to continue to speak up and help others overcome their challenges."
