Keeping Philadelphians Safe, One House at a Time

Keystone Mercy Celebrates 10 Years with Rebuilding Together Philadelphia

March 30, 2006
Philadelphia, PA - Twenty-five volunteers from Keystone Mercy Health Plan will partner with the Rebuilding Together Philadelphia (RTP) organization to perform essential repairs on two homes in the Strawberry Mansion section of the city, during three weekends in April. This is Keystone Mercy's tenth year volunteering with RTP.

Rebuilding Together is a national movement of volunteers acting as community builders in order to prevent homelessness. In Philadelphia, 60,000 homeowners live at or below the poverty level. Their limited resources often cause them to make sacrifices that expose themselves to health and safety risks. Much of the program's focus is on older adults and people with disabilities.

Each year in Philadelphia, 1,000 volunteers make essential repairs for low-income homeowners, helping to keep them in their homes living in warmth, safety, and independence. Over the past 15 years, RTP volunteers have directly affected over 650 Philadelphians. Last year, volunteers helped 61 homeowners.

Founded in 1973 as Christmas in April, Rebuilding Together has become a national movement dedicated to preventing homelessness by rebuilding local communities. Since its inception and through last year, 20,350 Philadelphia-area volunteers have shored up crumbling walls, floors, roofs and porches; repaired heaters, plumbing and wiring; and plastered and painted walls for 663 homeowners and 17 community agencies. Total services provided to homeowners are estimated at $16,950,000.
